Man, 23, saved from drowning in the River Thames by lifeboat crews

Lifeboat crews pulled a man out of the River Thames who was “within seconds away from drowning” during a dramatic Easter Sunday rescue this morning.

The 23-year-old man was seen in the water close to Blackfriars Bridge by a person working on a nearby crane barge at 7.37am.

The crane workers helped direct the RNLI team to the man who was conscious and alert but “very distressed”.

He was taken back to the RNLI medical centre before being taken to hospital in an ambulance by the London Ambulance Service.

The RNLI praised the crane workers for helping with the rescue and directing crews to the location of the man.

Helmsman Keith Cima said: “This was a slick rescue made possible by the immediate actions by the crew of the crane barge Oktopus, who saw the man floating past their barge off Blackfriars Bridge.

“These actions followed by slick action from the lifeboat crew, which included two volunteers, helped save a life this morning.

“A few more seconds and it would have been a very different outcome for the young 23-year-old man, who would have gone under and drowned.”
