London could be set for another heatwave, with temperatures potentially rising to 30C this weekend, according to the Met Office.

It comes just weeks after the capital sweltered during a record-setting heatwave, with May 26 becoming the hottest day in May on record, with 35.1C measured at Kew Gardens.

The national weather service is saying that warm weather will return from Friday following a period of unsettled weather.

After more wind and rain on Wednesday and Thursday, temperatures will again rise above the season average of 21C across the south east, and could even hit 30C, according to Met Office meteorologist Dan Stroud.

Mr Stroud said: "We're looking at temperatures climbing into the weekend, particularly on Saturday and Sunday, so feeling much warmer than recent days, with temperatures quite widely above average, especially across the south come Saturday, and even more so on Sunday."

Mr Stroud suggested that temperatures will be heading comfortably into the high 20s, with “a chance" of thermometers hitting 30C.

He added that there was the “potential” for another heatwave, while stressing longer range forecasts carry more uncertainty.

A heatwave is officially defined as a period of at least three consecutive days where the daily maximum temperature meets or exceeds a certain threshold - in London, this temperature is 28C.

Mr Stroud explained that the change in the weather is due to a change in the jet stream, with incoming higher pressure building from the south and bringing sunnier and more settled weather.

While a heatwave is possible, currently the forecast in London has temperatures a little below the criteria levels.

According to BBC Weather, while there’ll be plenty of sunshine, the capital is expected to have highs of between 24C and 27C for each day between Saturday and Tuesday.
