Matt Hutchinson, director of SpareRoom.co.uk, says: "London rents are expensive so people will always be happy to find ways of paying a little less.
"Trading skills for rent can be a great way to do that. On the flipside there are others, often the elderly, who have space in their home and don't want to downsize but could use a little help to remain independent. For them offering a cheap room in exchange for company and a few odd jobs is great way to get a little help they couldn't otherwise afford.
"Housework, babysitting and elderly care are probably the most common things we see people asking for.
"But we've also seen more unusual offers, like a room in exchange for helping the owner catalogue his huge sheet music collection.
"It's all about people finding creative ways to trade what they have for what they need.”
