Teenage girl, 14, killed by car as she walks to school

A girl aged 14 was killed and two others injured when they were hit by a car as they walked to school this morning.

The teenager died instantly in the crash at just after 8am in Witney, Oxfordshire. A man who was walking with the three girls was also injured.

Police said the 18-year-old driver of a blue Citroën C2 was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The injured were rushed to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, where the girl was pronounced dead.

Inspector Paul Winks said : “It appears the Citroën has mounted the pavement, hit the male first and he is seriously injured. It has then struck either two or three of the girls.

“This is a truly horrific incident and the driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Special family liaison officers will be talking to the family of the schoolgirl who was killed.”

The male pedestrian is thought to have been walking behind the girls and suffered a broken leg and other injuries. One of the schoolgirls is described as having serious injuries while the other is less seriously hurt.

The three girls were all pupils at the Henry Box School in Witney.

The road was closed in both directions this morning as police accident investigators examined the scene.

Police said it was too early to say if the car had been speeding.
