However Ms Emmott dismissed the criticism and said more privately-owned open spaces such as Granary Square at King’s Cross and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park were inevitable in an era of government spending cuts.
As an example of the thinking behind some of the rules, she added: “Mindful that the Thames is a busy waterway for a range of vessels there are some things you won’t be able to do but always for a considered reason.
“So to all you keen anglers, casting a fishing rod from the bridge will not be possible. We don’t want people to drop litter and we’ll naturally discourage any activities that could spoil the environment for others.
“This is no different from any other public space. It’s really a matter of common sense and if you’re not sure what to do you should check the conditions of use.”
