This year’s Serpentine Gallery summer pavilion will be a multi-coloured chrysalis of opaque and translucent plastic, the first images reveal today.
The annual architectural commission in the grounds of the Kensington Gardens gallery will consist of a double-skinned structure of polygons, with visitors passing through a “secret corridor” between the inner and outer layer to discover a stained glass-effect café and event space at the heart.
It is being created by the Spanish architects José Selgas and his wife Lucia Cano. The couple said: “We sought a way to allow the public to experience architecture through simple elements — structure, light, transparency, shadows, lightness, form, sensitivity, change, surprise, colour and materials.”
Over the past 15 years, Serpentine pavilions have been designed by some of the world’s greatest architects including Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid.
The SelgasCano pavilion, which is sponsored by Goldman Sachs, will be open to the public from June 25 to October 18.
