Firefighters have rescued a man from a flat fire in south London.

Dramatic images showed the roof of the building on fire and smoke billowing into the sky as firefighters tackled the flames.

Half of the first floor and half of the roof of a terraced house converted into flats were alight, London Fire Brigade said.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "The fire produced a significant amount of smoke which was very visible in the surrounding area.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued one man from a flat on the ground floor of the building.

"Firefighters are expected to remain on scene throughout the night.”

On Twitter, the brigade added: “Firefighters have rescued a man from the ground floor.”

Crews were called at about 11.25pm to the blaze, which was brought under control by 1.10am.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
