Dive for the duvet, the cold weather is coming

A chill will settle on London this weekend as traditional autumn weather arrives, bringing wind, cloud and rain, forecasters said today.

After weeks of unusually warm conditions, the temperature is set to drop to 9C by Sunday, with up to 30mm of rain in the capital from today and through the night.

Emma Sharples, a forecaster at the Met Office, said: “We were very fortunate to have the good summer we did and we kept that warmth into the first part of autumn. This is the first time it’s turned. We’ve had cold air coming from the North.”

But staying in bed and pulling the covers over your head won’t help. A study at Penn State University in the US found that having a weekend lie-in did not make up for tiredness from the working week.

While hiding under the duvet did cut stress levels, the attention span of participants did not recover.
