Could this be London's first 24-hour strip club?

A lapdancing club is aiming to become London’s first 24-hour sex entertainment venue despite fierce opposition from neighbours.

Spearmint Rhino in Tottenham Court Road wants to be allowed to stage strip shows seven days a week and will put its case to Camden council’s licensing committee tomorrow.

It is the biggest case to be tested under new sex establishment licence laws, brought in last year to give local people a greater say over the regulation of adult entertainment venues.

Camden has nine strip clubs — the second highest number in the capital after Westminster — and campaigners have urged the borough to follow the example of councils such as Islington which are using the new powers to restrict the clubs.

The licensing application for Spearmint Rhino in Tottenham Court Road stipulates what would not be allowed and the club uses 62 CCTV cameras to monitor customers and staff. It is currently open for between eight and 14 hours a day and campaigners want these hours curtailed.

A total of 22 objections to the application have been made, with concerns including women “feeling intimidated” by customers who “loiter”. One resident wrote: “Having been relieved of all their money, these men are often angry as well as sexually frustrated.”

Anna van Heeswijk of Object, which campaigns against the objectification of women, said: “It is the responsibility of Camden council to keep the streets safe for women, to tackle exploitation and to place the rights of residents above the seeking of profit.”

Spearmint Rhino declined to comment. Camden councillor Abdul Hai said objections would be reviewed by the panel tomorrow, including “concerns over licensable hours”.
