A Chinese restaurant in South London appears to have permanently closed its doors after food hygiene inspectors found a "large amount" of mice droppings in its kitchen and customer areas.

Dumplings & Baos, at 31 Clapham Park Road in Clapham, received the lowest possible food hygiene rating, a zero out of 5, following an inspection by Lambeth Council’s Environmental Health team on March 26, 2026.

While the business initially closed voluntarily after the inspection, which is not uncommon while hygiene issues are addressed, Dumplings & Baos now appears to have ceased trading for good.

The restaurant’s phone number is no longer operational, and its online presence on Google lists it as ‘permanently closed’.

A full report, released after a Freedom of Information (FoI) request from the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), confirmed a “large amount” of mice droppings were found in multiple areas of the premises.

An inspector said: “I noted pest activity [mice droppings] in the kitchen next to the wok cooker and next to the upright fridge, under the sinks [in] the kitchen.

“There were also droppings on the shelf, on food trays, under the oven and under the table in bao bun preparation area in the restaurant seating area.”

Inspectors also found noodles and cooked chicken cooling in the outside rear area, which they warned could lead to cross contamination of cooked products.

They described the standard of cleaning in the bar area as “very poor” and said there was dirt and debris on the floor.

At the time of the visit, inspectors had instructed the restaurant to carry out several immediate improvements, including cleaning and disinfecting all of the areas where mice droppings were found and monitoring it regularly.

On concerns over the contamination of cooked food, inspectors instructed the restaurant to ensure all food is kept inside while cooling.

The restaurant has a 4.7 average rating out of 5 from 468 reviews on Google.

The report noted: “The premises was voluntary closed due to large amount of mice droppings found in the kitchen and around the food preparation area in the restaurant area.”
