City man hit by telegraph pole ‘improving slowly’

A city worker left fighting for his life after being hit by a falling telegraph pole is showing signs of improvement, his family have said.

Nick Fletcher, 27, was yards from his Wandsworth home when winds of up to 50mph brought down the pole on March 11. He was knocked unconscious and left bleeding heavily before being taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting, where he is in a stable condition.

His mother Anne Fletcher said her son was “doing okay” but added that she did not want to “jinx anything by shouting about it”. She added that she would not be commenting on whether the family planned to launch legal action against BT, which was responsible for maintaining the pole.

Last week Mrs Fletcher said her son, a ship broker with brokerage firm Icap, was being kept sedated because of a chest infection. She said: “He’s not in danger of dying but he is being kept sedated. We are all hoping he pulls through but we’ll have to wait and see what sort of condition he’s in.”

Mr Fletcher, an amateur rugby player with London Cornish, was in the process of moving into a two-bedroom flat he had bought in Spanish Road, where the telegraph pole came down.

At the time his mother described him as “a strong person and a fighter”.
