Brentford FC ‘should rethink tower blocks’

The League One club wants to move from Griffin Park, which has been the club’s home for more than 100 years, to a 20,000-seat stadium site in Lionel Road.

As well as the stadium the club is hoping to build 12 blocks of flats up to 16 storeys high, a hotel and about 775 parking spaces.

In a show of hands vote at a public meeting organised by Richmond Park MP Zac Goldsmith last night, most of the 250 people packed into The Church of St Anne, Kew Green, supported a new stadium. But many also said the tower blocks were a massive overdevelopment. Mr Goldsmith said: “They have to come up with a scheme which is more appropriate and in keeping with the area.”

Club representative Brian Burgess said: “We will work with you to make sure that this development in five or 10 years’ time is one that we can all be proud of.”
