It may have been legal in 1985, but using a mobile phone at the wheel got the driver of a Back to the Future style DeLorean in trouble with the law yesterday.

A man in the classic car was pulled over for the traffic offence in central London yesterday, police said.

It is possible he was headed to a gathering of famous sci-fi cars spotted in Kensington yesterday afternoon to promote the new Lego Dimensions computer game.

Police in Westminster shared this photograph of the famed car, only produced briefly during the 1980s, after it was pulled over by traffic cops.

“Bet this driver wishes he could time travel,” tweeted an officer. “Don’t use a mobile! Even in a DeLorean.”

Using a mobile phone at the wheel has only been illegal since 2003, although mobile phones in 1985 were somewhat less convenient than they are today.

The Batmobile was also snapped driving through west London yesterday, as was a replica Jurassic Park Ford Explorer.

A police spokesman said anyone caught using a mobile phone while driving a car or riding a motorbike risked a £100 fine and three penalty points.

If the case goes to court, the driver risks a fine of 10 times that and a possible ban from driving. It is not believed the driver pictured yesterday was arrested.
