One married couple in northern England are
reported to have received pay-outs totalling nearly £1 million and then to have
been re-employed in the health service a few months later.
NHS England’s chairman, Professor Sir
Malcolm Grant, stressed salaries had to be “proportionate” to recruit and
retain highly-skilled and experienced people for key management posts.
“We have been focussing closely also on
cost-efficiency, with the result that running costs have now been cut by half
compared with the costs of the previous system,” he added.
Many of the London PCTs had the level of
pay-offs, but not the names of individuals receiving them, in their annual
reports, but a significant number appeared to have left it harder to find the
redundancy sums by having them in less accessible “notes”.
