James Rowley, 18, attends Harris Westminster Sixth Form. He is going to read classics at Cambridge after receiving an A* in history and an A* in politics at A-level, as well as an A* in both English literature and philosophy, theology and ethics in his Cambridge international Pre-Us.
He said: “I got the best grades possible, so I am very chuffed. It was a bit bittersweet as I didn’t actually sit the exam for them, but I obviously cannot complain. It was hard seeing other people upset today. To fail an exam that you haven’t even sat — it’s really hard.”
“The way we have been graded is something I have mixed feelings over. In theory, it should reward those, like me, who have put in hard work consistently. But those who don’t get on well with or put much effort in with their teachers will be affected by an over-reliance on teacher judgment. It also ignores those who perform excellently on the day
"While it is hard to create a system where everyone is happy, we do have to look at the fact that the most deprived schools will be hit hardest by this need for standardisation. The system doesn’t convince me as being fair at all.”
