A man who works in Chalton Street, who wished to be known only as Shamim, said one of his colleagues heard the gunshots.

Shamim told the Press Association: “My colleague told me there was a big bang. A loud bang a few times.”

He added patrons of the nearby pub – The Cock Tavern – came out to see what had happened.

“Chalton Street has always had a bad record about this… a lot of violence. A lot of residents don’t feel safe any more,” Shamim said.

“There are big numbers of residents in this area, we need to have more police.”
