An Uber driver has been sentenced to death for the rape and murder of British embassy worker nearly two years ago.

Tarek Houshi admitted raping 30-year-old Rebecca Dykes in Beirut and strangling her to death with a rope in December 2017, Lebanon's national news agency said

Ms Dykes, who worked in Beirut with the Department for International Development, was last seen leaving a bar in the Gemayzeh district of Beirut.

Houshi was arrested two days later.

Authorities said at the time that Houshi had a criminal record,

His death sentence can be appealed and the country as not carried out an execution since 2004, according to Human Rights Watch.
