London bus driver fighting for life after assault on Battersea Bridge

A London bus driver is in critical condition in hospital after an assault in the early hours on Monday morning.

The incident occurred at around half past midnight on Battersea Bridge, where it is believed the driver was assaulted following a confrontation on the pavement by the bus, which was stationary at a bus stop.

Police arrested a 32-year-old man at the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, and he remains in custody.

The 64-year-old TfL bus driver was given emergency first aid before being taken to hospital by London’s air ambulance.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward with any further information.

Detective Superintendent Fiona Van Kampen, from the Met's South West Borough Command Unit, said: "We recognise the intense concern this will cause within the local community, and are working to establish the exact circumstances of the attack.

"This took place on one of London's busiest bridges, so we are urgently appealing for anyone with information to come forward. If you have dashcam or mobile phone footage of what happened, it is important that we see it.

"Our thoughts remain with the victim's family as enquiries continue."
