Why you should consider sleeping on silk pillows

It may sound wildly extravagant but I sleep on silk pillowcases.

Yes, my other half thinks I’m mad and yes, my dry cleaning bill is enormous. But honestly, I swear it has transformed my morning beauty regime. Since making the switch my skin is as plump as a marshmallow, my hair is glossier and OMG is it comfy.

So what’s the science behind it?

‘On a physical level, cotton tends to scratch and tug one’s hair and face,’ explains LA super hairstylist Jen Atkin, ‘whereas silk creates a smooth surface, reducing friction. Your hair slips around as you toss and turn, minimising split end breakage.’

On top of this there is scientific evidence to suggest that silk may have topical antioxidant properties, meaning it helps in the fight against skin ageing. Many brands also use non-toxic fabric dyes and bleaches in their silk pillowcases, reducing your daily (or nightly) chemical exposure. Plenty enough reasons to convert me.

Note: for a double whammie of beauty sleep brilliance I layer on a serum or night cream formulated with silk proteins, which bind moisture to the skin and leave you cushiony plump come morning.
