In a cool Celtic cube: Castro Baroña

Less touristy than the rest of Spain, Galicia in the north-west has wild beaches and sublime seafood. An hour from the Unesco world heritage site of Santiago de Compostela, Castro Baroña (named after Celtic ruins in the area) is a high-spec holiday home available to the UK market for the first time.

With a contemporary cube design combining wood (much of it recycled from bateas — wooden platforms used in the local mussel industry), concrete and glass — you’d be right in thinking this looks like the work of an architect. Iñaki Leite has won multiple awards for the design and energy efficiency — it holds the highest rating possible and has underfloor heating and a cooling system. Raw materials include untreated wood and rock.

Floor-to-ceiling windows afford sea views, and three bedrooms and four bathrooms are complemented by an in-house music system and wi-fi.

The usual barbecue is trumped by the existence of a Teppanyaki table.
