How Nova Scotia embraced tourism

As tourists peacefully pottered around market stalls on Halifax's waterfront, I found it hard to imagine the panic and anguish that once gripped this pretty town.

On 14 April 1912, four days into its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, the luxury liner RMS Titanic hit an iceberg and sank.

As the nearest city, Halifax played a huge role in the wake of the tragedy. Of the 1,500-plus passengers who died, 300 bodies were recovered by rescue boats, with many buried in the city.

To commemorate the centenary of the ill-fated voyage, several events will take place in Halifax throughout the year, including exhibitions, tours and a stage play.

But Nova Scotia is much more than a museum showcasing a tragic past. In fact, these days water-based activities are proving to be an attraction, especially in the warm months from June to August. The Bay of Fundy, best known for the extraordinary tidal variations found in its upper basins, is the ideal spot for tidal bore rafting.

So, perched on the edge of an inflatable powerboat with several other thrill seekers, we set off along the Shubenacadie River, tackling big, soupy brown waves. Back on land, I spent a relaxing afternoon strolling around Lunenburg a Unesco World Heritage Site rich in seafaring history.

With a vibrant waterfront, narrow streets and pretty British colonial houses, it's full of old world charm.
