But this was just a foretaste. Finnish design really took off after independence, and only 13 per cent of the country dates from before 1917. Building at remarkable speed, Saarinen created the plan for a modern Helsinki before emigrating to America where his son Eero became a leading Internationalist architect of the 20th century.
While Saarinen's partners opted for lower profile work, their place was taken by the likes of Alvar Aalto, who invented Nordic Modernism - the style and concept that led directly to Ikea.
Aalto not only designed buildings but the furniture and glassware to go with them. He couldn't approach a project without evaluating its function and thereby rethinking its form. But he didn't always triumph. Anyone who has been to a concert in Finlandia Hall will know that he was no acoustician, and his belief that a cladding of Carrara marble tiles could withstand the harsh Finnish winter was naïve.
Still, it looks good today (with its new set of marble tiles) and its influence on late 20th-century public buildings is clear to see. Nearby, a new concert hall by Marko Kivistö was opened in August so that Finlandia Hall can be used solely as a conference centre.
This Helsinki Music Centre is mostly buried underground but its upper walls are made of glass to admit as much light as possible during the long winter.
Helsinki is still way ahead in design technology. To commemorate this, the city centre, south of Pohjoisesplanadi, is now known as the Design District; 25 streets of design shops, museums, art galleries and restaurants.
Meanwhile, back at Hvitträsk where it all began, Lindgren's house can now be rented, Gesellius's house is a restaurant and Saarinen's a shrine to the birthplace of Finnish design.
As I enter Saarinen's house, there's a welcoming fire where the three men would sit and drink and talk about the future. I doubt that they ever guessed their Helsinki would one day become World Design Capital 2012.
