SHOULD SWING BY The Frick Collection is the most civilised way to see art in the city. It's in a private house on Central Park (1 East 70th Street) that was turned over to the public by an industrialist, and is home to works by Gainsborough, Bellini, Rembrandt and Ingres as well as Limoges enamels. Wander around pretending you are an Edith Wharton creation. The best bit? It takes an hour or less.
MUST TAKE A BREAK In the Private Park open-air bar at the Hudson Hotel, encased by 45ft trees, ivy-clad walls and a glass roof. And there's the Sky Terrace of the 15th floor which is New York's answer to a laid-back Ibiza bar, with breathtaking views of the city.
BEST SUSHI The Blue Ribbon Brasserie in Soho (14 Bedford Street) may just serve the best raw fish in town. It is done with flair and buzz, mirroring its nearby sister restaurant, the Blue Ribbon Bakery. Not touristy.
FOR GOSSIP GIRL WATCH Head directly to Via Quadronno (25 East 73rd Street). This unassuming little Milanese café is where the real-life Blairs and Serenas scheme and plot. It serves a mean non-fat capp, too.
BEST WAY TO GET A TABLE You have to beg for the relevant ma"tre d's cell phone number from a native. This is the only way to get close to a table at the most popular joints such as the Minetta Tavern, the new opening from the McNally brothers. A savvy concierge should pull it off, but do tip him.
MUST BUY Curiosities from Evolution in Soho (120 Spring Street). Everything from butterflies, glazed alligator heads and hides to fossils, snake skeletons and raccoons' penis bones. It's not pricey and it is an adventure.
DON'T PACK Tight, short or low-cut for daytime - New Yorkers are surprisingly conservative. At night, anything goes.
MUST BROWSE Barney's jewellery department is stuffed full of treasures. Designers include Irene Neuwirth and Lucifer Vir Honestus.
MUST DISCOVER The Virgin Clubhouse at Heathrow Terminal 3 is the ultimate preflight fantasy. There's a 14-metre cocktail bar, a deli food bar and waitresses to take orders if you can't leave your chair (complete with data- and power-points). Arrive in time for a dip in the pool or a steam. Get a spray-tan, a manipedi or a massage. Then, preened, fed and watered, recline on a cloud-like sofa in the Sky Lounge and dream of take-off...
IT'S NOT GLAMOROUS BUT... ...Duane Reade, the American equivalent of Boots, sells great cheap socks, pens, vitamins, make-up, children's presents and snacks and brands you can't get in London. It's also a good glimpse into the American mind-set.
