These are the most dramatic job resignations ever

We’ve all worked in a job where we’ve dreamed of having a Bridget Jones moment: telling our horrible boss to stick their lousy job and marching proudly out of the office to the tune of Aretha Franklin’s “Respect”.

But in real life, quitting a job involves a lot of paperwork, painfully awkward meetings, and realising it’s been far too long since we last updated our CV.

Or does it? As one now former Twitter employee proved by deleting President Donald Trump’s Twitter account on Thursday, departures aren’t always a sombre affair (though his account was reactivated after 11 minutes).

This isn’t the first and certainly won’t be the last time someone has quit their job in a flurry of drama. Here’s a round-up of the most awe-inspiring resignations – we wouldn’t recommend trying all of them out…

When resigning was literally the icing on the cake

After working almost four years for the Border Force Agency at Stansted Airport, Chris Holmes baked an extravagantly decorated cake to tell his bosses he was leaving to pursue a career in baking.

The 31-year-old from Cambridgeshire told bosses life was too short not to do something which makes him happy. After recently becoming a father, he had decided to take his cake business fulltime.

Four years on he’s still baking, and, according to the BBC, has no regrets.

A newspaper column

Very few people have the power or the influence to get a column published in a newspaper. But in 2012, when London banker Greg Smith decided he’d had enough of working for global investment bank Goldman Sachs, he decided to let his boss find out over his morning coffee.

Smith’s resignation letter was published as a leader article in the New York Times. Headlined “Why I’m Leaving Goldman Sachs”, the letter included some astonishing revelations, branding staff at the company “morally bankrupt”.

He’s now present of Bloom, a financial services company, so it worked out for him.

An emergency exit

Air steward Steven Slater made the headlines in 2010 when he commandeered a plane’s intercom system on a flight from Pittsburgh to New York to announce his resignation.

During the flight, he was reportedly drawn into an altercation between passengers about overhead luggage space. This was followed by a woman ignoring his requests to stay seated as the plane landed.

He then allegedly used the intercom to launch a foul-mouthed tirade against the passenger, adding: "To those who have shown dignity and respect these last 20 years, thanks for the great ride.” He then grabbed a beer from the in-flight trolley, activated the plane’s inflatable slide and departed.
