The Ryan Gosling Bomber jacket

There's no escaping Ryan Gosling this autumn.

Films such as Blue Valentine and The Notebook confirmed him as a global heart-throb, but to the heterosexual men of this world, Gosling was just another rom-com star with pecs. Yet following the release of hyperviolent action film Drive, in which he stars as a Hollywood stuntman by day, heist wheelman by night, it seems the alphas are, at last, convinced of his charms. So much so that they wish to emulate his character's distinctive look.

The quilted white satin bomber jacket (with an embroidered gold scorpion on the back), which 30-year-old Gosling wears throughout the movie, has become the inspiration for much of the outerwear available on the high street at the moment.

While it remains unconfirmed, rumours are circulating in the blogosphere that Urban Outfitters could be producing exact replicas of the jacket. American Apparel - the king of the shiny satin bomber - has all manner of colour variants now in store, which echo that of the original including ivory, pale chrome and bright silver. ASOS offers a two-tone slim-line option for a subtler approach.

Pre-empting the film's success on the catwalk, Alexander McQueen presented a bomber jacket in white satin with burgundy trim - which (minus the scorpion) was a close match to that worn by the actor. In his spring/summer collection, Christian Lacroix included a marbled driving jacket complete with aviator shades and cropped dark denim jeans.

"Since Drive hit the cinemas, Gosling's James Dean-inspired look is noticeably influencing shoppers," says Lee Douros, menswear buying manager for my-wardrobe.com. "We have seen a rise in the sales of Levi's black 501 jeans and leather bombers from the likes of Acne, D&G and Swedish brand Jofama."

The allure of the character in Drive isn't that he's an all-American pretty boy but a resolutely cool force who will go to any lengths to protect his love Irene, played by Carey Mulligan.

David Hellqvist, digital editor of Dazed Digital and menswear expert, credits Gosling's personal style for the film's fashion status.

"Gosling is clever enough to know that less really is more," says Hellqvist, "but the character adds a bit of glamour by wearing a shiny satin off-white bomber jacket - it's his way of showing a bit of razzle dazzle."
