The Crush: Prince George's super-nanny Maria Borrallo

Mary Poppins she ain’t, but Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo is baby Prince George’s first supercalifragilistic super-nanny and ever since she stepped off that plane in New Zealand, where she’s caring for the royal sproglet while Kate and Wills do some diplomatic nose-nuzzling, we have been OBSESSED. She is exactly the person we would want looking after our children — strict, dedicated, unassuming and decidedly not a 21-year-old Penelope Cruz lookalike.

In fact, the 43-year-old is known as ‘Santa’ by her friends as she was such a pious child they thought she might become a nun. Borrallo went on to train at Norland College, the £13K per year school for A-list nannies, which makes its students wear funny little hats and white gloves and teaches you ‘how to dodge a potential kidnapper with a pram’, and ‘advanced all-weather driving’.

She may have been born and bred in Spain, but she dresses like a ‘just dashing to Peter Jones for a pair of tights’ Sloane. And it works: observe the lack of make-up, the practical ponytail, the ill-fitting blazer and ‘too busy for buttons’ shirt. Mary Poppins described her own qualifications thus: ‘Item one: a cheery disposition. I am never cross. Item two: rosy cheeks... obviously. Item three: play games, all sorts.’ Maria is clearly not the rosy-cheeked type, but caring for the future king of England is serious business and we’re pretty sure she’s not just sticking him in front of Dora the Explorer... or is she? With Spanish predicted to be the world’s most widely spoken language by the time he’s crowned George VII, teaching the pequeño principe to roll his Rs is in all our interests. Viva King Jorge!
