Her fallen Manhattan socialite Jasmine, in Woody Allen’s triumphant ‘return to form’ (though he’d already won us back with Midnight in Paris), is a hot mess of dishevelled silk blouses, Chanel jackets, Hermès scarves and Birkin handbags, which she grips like her life depends on them. We covet her wardrobe so much we’ve been hanging around the Knightsbridge Oxfam hoping an ambassador’s wife might have had a New Year clear-out of Beckhamesque proportions. But most impressive is that 44-year-old Cate, who is in the Tilda Swinton school of cool, crafted her character’s wardrobe herself, because she claims Allen has ‘no interest or understanding of his characters’ aesthetic’. Jolly well done Ms Blanchett, Crush would give her an award for that if she wasn’t slated for so many already.
