The Crush: Cary Joji Fukunaga

RIP the topknot. There’s a new man-do in town and a new (to us) hot man rocking it. Allow me to introduce Cary Joji Fukunaga who made headlines at the Emmys not for a well-deserved Outstanding Directing gong for True Detective, but for turning up with his long black hair in two French braids. And Crush is so pleased he did or we may not have even noticed him among the bevy of bad dresses.

This would have been a huge oversight: far from being just a better-looking Joseph Gordon-Levitt, this New York-based writer/director ticks boxes Crush didn’t even know it had until now. For a start, the 37-year-old Californian is half-Swedish, half-Japanese, which is surely a genetic slam dunk (beat that, Pharrell).

He was a snowboarder in a previous life but is also a hopeless romantic: ‘I’ve written [girlfriends] immense love letters that are supposed to be opened over days at a time.’ Pass the smelling salts! As if we needed further convincing of this Renaissance man’s credentials, Fukunaga is best friends with Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal (we’re planning the dinner party already) and, not forgetting, he’d be able to braid our hair and hopefully let us share his shampoo. Truly delectable.
