North Kensington near Ladbroke Grove. It's near enough to Notting Hill, but you can still leave the house without make-up and not feel ashamed.

Have you been away recently?
I've just got back from Kefalonia with my husband and our children. Some days we hired a boat and went to Ithaca; other days we just lay in the sun and ate tzatziki till we felt sick. I also had a very naughty girly trip to New York in February. It was totally frivolous and I spent the entire time feeling guilty about it.

What was the last play you saw?
A Doll's House at the Donmar. It was amazing. I'm now kicking myself that I didn't get tickets for A Streetcar Named Desire.

What advice would you give a tourist?
Stay away from Leicester Square and visit Greenwich.

What are your secret London addresses?
Café Garcia on Portobello Road is great for Spanish food such as jamon serrano, Manchego cheese and marinated anchovies. When I'm writing, I spend all my time in The Grocer on Elgin buying ready-made meals; I think they are the only reason my husband and kids haven't left me. I only recently discovered CoS and I think it's amazing. Great for staples and well-cut trousers. Daunt Books in Holland Park is the best bookshop in London. They really supported The Outcast and are very knowledgeable.

What's your favourite local restaurant?
Le Café Anglais. We go quite a lot. It's got a wonderful brasserie menu and it's not pretentious.

What is your earliest London memory?
Being on the King's Road when I was five years old. It must have been 1972 or 1973, and all I could see were brightly coloured platform shoes and huge flares.

What would be on your tombstone?
I'm not intending to have a tombstone. I'd like to rot away under a tree somewhere, unmarked.

What are you most afraid of?
Public speaking. I get very nervous and panicky. Doing readings is fine, but there is a reason I spend all my time on my own in a room writing.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Westfield shopping centre. I ranted against it before it opened, and brainwashed the children about how it was the evil cathedral of capitalism, but now we love it - we can't get enough of the place.
