Like Dick Diver, the hero of F Scott Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night (which gets going in the South of France), Charles Finch always throws a great party with a fabulous guest list. I was seated next to Paul Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft, who was staying on his boat Octopus, the fifth largest privately owned superyacht in the world, nicknamed 'The Geek's Revenge'. Allen, who arrived fresh from a book tour of his autobiography, spoke of his boat as if she were a pet whale: 'You can usually see her out there somewhere,' he observed quietly, before hinting that he'd like to spend more time movie-making, although it would need to be on his terms: 'In technology, when you want to do something, it happens. Most of the time making films is like watching paint dry.' He headed off to über-agency CAA's party thrown by Soho House, presumably on business.
