What was the last play you saw?
I saw Dominic West in Life Is A Dream at the Donmar Warehouse. It was fantastic.

What advice would you give to a tourist?
Visit the museums and art galleries. I especially enjoy the the Royal Academy followed by afternoon tea at the Wolseley. A pub is a must, even if you don't like beer, just to feel the atmosphere. My favourites are The Ladbroke Arms and the Windsor Castle in Notting Hill.

Which shops do you rely on?
Harvey Nichols. Also, Topshop always has cute things.

What's the best meal you've had in London?
I love Scott's and Nobu.

What's your earliest London memory?
Getting lost with an A-Z in my hands somewhere in the outskirts and not being able to find a cab. London is a labyrinth. The streets are so small and curvy and you never know where one ends and where it begins. And don't even try to figure out the door numbering system.

What would be on your tombstone?
'Can't wait to come back.'

What would you do as Mayor of London for the day?
The Tube needs to run until 2am and, of course, I'd get rid of bendy buses.

What was the last album you downloaded?
Ninet Tayeb's songs. She is a wonderful
Israeli singer.

What's your life philosophy?
Enjoy it – it's short.

What would you save from a fire?
My writings. I have journals and scrapbooks from all the places I have been.

What animal would you most like to be?
Squirrel - isn't it obvious?

What makes you laugh?
When people get angry I can't help but laugh.

What makes you cry?
Films: I watched Life is Beautiful the other day; that always makes me cry. And any kind of performance be it a dance, musical or opera, especially Madame Butterfly and La Boheme. And I don't only mean tears of sadness; those are quite often the tears of joy.

What are you up to at the moment?
I am still working on my film with Roland Joffe There Be Dragons, about an investigative journalist just after the Spanish Civil war. I'll be heading to the US later this year to shoot Terence Mallick's new project with Christian Bale.

Which is your favourite shopping street in London?
Portobello Road for the market and the furniture stores as I'm currently decorating my flat. I also love Matches on Ledbury Road.

Who's your hero?
Simone de Beauvoir, she was a remarkable writer and thinker.

What do you most like wearing?
J Brand jeans, a Marc Jacobs top and a pair of Guiseppe Zanotti flats.

What's the most romantic place in London?
My house, because I can be myself there.

What are your favourite London discoveries?
The bar at Dukes Hotel. Auctions at Lots Road and all the Donmar, The Royal Court and National theatres.

Have you ever stolen anything?
Never. My mummy told me it was bad.

What's your favourite London club?
Bungalow 8

Where did you last go on holiday?
While I was filming There will be Dragons in Argentina I made a short trip to Machu Picchu in Peru. It was absolutely amazing.
