My London: Alastair Campbell

Have you ever stayed in a London hotel?
The last time I stayed in a London hotel was the Chelsea Harbour, now called the Wyndham Grand, when I was training for Soccer Aid earlier this year.

What advice would you give to a tourist?
Walk.

What is your earliest London memory
Looking out of the car window as my dad drove me and my brother from the M1 through North London to a bapgipe tournament. I was about 12.

What do you miss most when you're out of London ?
The sofa in our kitchen. I spend lots of time on it - reading, writing and sending e-mails.

What are your favourite home comforts?
I had a sculpture made of our three children for Fiona's 50th. It never fails to make me smile.

What would you do as Mayor for a day
Resign, get a haircut and go back to presenting Have I Got News For You.

What are your extravagances?
Racing bikes and supporting Burnley football team.

What is your life philosophy?
Get a grip.

Which is your favourite street for shopping?
Marylebone High Street, but I am not a shopper; I come out in a rash if I am in a shop too long.

Where were your last three holidays?
Provence. Every summer we stay in a house with a view of Mont Ventoux. I stare at it for two weeks then cycle up it in the third. Maine, USA, visiting one of my wife Fiona's friends - we saw a bald eagle there. We rent a house near Fort William, in the Highlands, not far from the scene of the Glencoe massacre.

Which British entrepreneur do you admire?
Tim Campbell, one of the early winners of The Apprentice. He has set up the Bright Ideas Trust, a social initiative to inspire young entrepreneurs.

What are your current projects?
Planning fundraising events for Leukaemia Research's 50th anniversary in 2010.

What is your favourite item in your wardrobe? A dark grey Johnstons jacket I bought 15 years ago, because it still fits - just.
