My London: Abi Morgan

Where do you live?

On a hill in Stroud Green. I can see from Canary Wharf to the London Eye from the top of my road.

Last play you saw?

Blue Sky at Hampstead Theatre. I love someone in it [her partner is the actor Jacob Krichefski].

Favourite shops?

Gail’s for coffee after the school run. Fuji Foods on Priory Road, Hornsey, for the best sushi ever. Clock Tower fruit and veg in Crouch End, because you can have a good squeeze of everything. I like Ottolenghi when I am feeling chipper and Borough Market because it was our gastronomic playground when my babes were babies and we needed to wheel them around for hours in buggies.

Best place for a first date?

I’m a cheap date. I love the South Bank: every era of architecture is there and you can stop, look and listen. And then a ride on the back of a bike to pick up a Dirty Burger on Highgate Road.

First thing you do when you arrive in London?

Dump my suitcase and then circumnavigate it for the next week while it festers in the hallway. Kiss my kids and catch the last ten minutes of Modern Family if I’m lucky.

Most romantic thing someone’s done for you?

A weekend away 20 minutes from my front door. Delicious food and a deep bath in a Dean Street Townhouse hotel room, and a candlelit concert at St Martin-in-the-Fields.

Best meal?

Chargrilled squid followed by capesante in padella (sautéed scallops) at The River Café. And any meal my brother Huw has cooked me.

Earliest London memory?

Being taken for milkshakes at Maxwell’s in Hampstead by my ma’s oldest friend, the author Margaret Drabble, aged seven. Her kids were the coolest and I chose a pair of Snoopy socks on the way home.

Favourite London discovery?

I go on the School of Life website a lot and have even booked for a dinner where they discuss the possibilities for life in the future.

Best thing a London cabbie has said to you?

‘I’ve written a script…’ It happens all the time.

Favourite club?

I like bowling with my kids at Shoreditch House. And an Eastern Standard cocktail on the roof goes down very nicely.

What was the last album you downloaded?

Alt-J’s An Awesome Wave.

Best place for a nightcap?

A downstairs booth at Milk & Honey on Poland Street.

Biggest extravagances?

Football kits and leotards. And parking tickets — even with that new phone-number thing I’m always ten minutes late.

Best piece of advice you’ve been given?

‘Don’t moan, do it.’ Said when I, rather like the Lena Dunham character in Girls, was wondering how I was ever going to make it in this great city a long time ago. They had a point.
