The Up is pricier to buy than its direct rivals but useful dealer discounts are available and there’s good fuel economy, whichever engine you go for. The High Up trim is well worth the extra money for what it gives you: the Up Beats model comes with high-powered stereo system but the base-spec Take Up doesn’t even have air-con.
Customer experience indicates that this is one of the most reliable city cars. The gearbox and sat-nav are the two most likely sources of trouble. Its three-year warranty is beaten by Hyundai i10’s five-year cover.
Safety kit is good all-round, with a five-star EuroNCAP result achieved in 2011, but there are no rear side airbags. Autonomous emergency braking is optional on most models.
Instant verdict: Hyundai i10 beats it in some areas, but for class and comfort the Up is streets ahead.
