Electric vehicle ‘charge as you drive’ trials to start by end of year

Trials of a wireless charging infrastructure are planned to begin by the end of 2015

The UK is gearing up to start testing a state-of-the-art charging system, which boosts electric vehicles (EVs) as they drive along the highway. Trials of the new technology – which sees a wireless charging infrastructure installed under chosen roads – are planned to begin by the end of 2015.

The newly announced, 18-month pilot scheme will see specially adapted cars monitor the tech’s efficiency and safety. These will show how the system can improve on the conventional charging method – which can be done only when the vehicle is stationary, via plug-in facilities.

This lengthy procedure severely impacts upon EVs’ long-distance abilities – a major drawback of these eco-friendly models.

Highways England-commissioned studies have already suggested the tech’s feasibility. Chief highways engineer Mike Wilson explained: “Vehicle technologies are advancing at an ever-increasing pace. We’re committed to supporting the growth of ultra-low emissions vehicles.”

The Government and Highways England have already pledged to install motorway plug-in charging points every 20 miles, as part of the Road Investment Strategy.

Transport Minister Andrew Jones said: “The government is committing £500 million to keep Britain at the forefront of this technology. As this study shows, we continue to explore options on how to improve journeys and make low-emission vehicles accessible.”
