Suzuki Vitara 1.4 S driven

At the centre of this version is the Boosterjet 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol turbo, and it’s certainly an impressive unit. Its 138bhp is delivered strongly and evenly from pretty low down in the revs, reflecting Suzuki’s expertise at building large-capacity four-pot motorcycle engines. It’s teamed with an easy-to-operate six-speed manual box, giving a rewarding drive.

Slightly stiffened suspension ensures accomplished handling in the bends, while the 4x4 set-up channels Suzuki’s off-road know-how to provide plenty of grip on the tarmac as well as steady-footed reassurance away from it. Only the steering could do with being more positive.

Inside belies the ‘small SUV’ tag, as four adults can be comfortably seated with room to spare. It’s a hard-wearing and well equipped cabin, and among the S model’s standard kit is a 7.0in touchscreen, climate and adaptive cruise control, sat-nav, suede-effect upholstery, Bluetooth and much more. The boot is also surprisingly spacious and adaptable.

Currently the Boosterjet engine is available only in S trim, hence the relatively high price; as we’ve already said, £20,000-plus does seem a lot for a Vitara. Fitting it in a few lesser trim levels would make a lot of sense and bring in more buyers. But price aside, it does show that ever after all these years this little Suzuki is still a real trooper.
