That’s due in part to the S3 retaining all the qualities that make the A3 such a good premium option in this part of the market. It’s impeccably put together, with excellent cabin materials and strong ergonomics as well as a generous array of kit – principal among which is the 12.3” Virtual Cockpit which has been universally raved about since Audi first introduced it.
Basically, the S3 is a very fast hatchback which doesn’t ask you to make any compromises at all. And, of course, it’s an Audi, which for many people makes it the perfect way of demonstrating how well you’re doing in the world.
If you’re sufficiently comfortable with who you are not to worry about badges, the most obvious rival to the S3 is the closely related VW Golf R. This is a little more involving as a performance car, but no less confidence inspiring to drive fast.
It’s also cheaper, though not by much. Not enough, at any rate, to make the S3 look like anything less than an outstanding option if what you want is a searing hatch that responds when you’re giving it everything – but remains just as pleasing to drive when you’re not.
