BMW has earmarked a new quad-turbocharged, in-line six-cylinder diesel engine for its 2016 M750d.

The performance-orientated engine is also intended for use in four-wheel-drive M Performance variants of the X5 xDrive50d, X6 xDrive50d, and X7xDrive50d.

The new engine is scheduled to replace BMW’s existing tri-turbocharged diesel and is claimed to develop well over 400bhp and 590lb ft from its 3.0 litre capacity. This compares to the 376bhp and 545lb ft of the existing tri-turbocharged unit.

Official details are thin on the ground, but it’s thought that the new engine’s fourth turbo could either be a small electrically-driven part piggy-backing on the existing tri-turbo unit used in the M550d and X5 xDrive50d M-Performance, or a fourth conventional gas-driven turbocharger.

The electric option would increase low-end boost pressure for added punch.
