The exterior gets revised bumpers fore and aft, new headlight treatment and a noticeably bolder grille treatment that probably aims more for Asia than Europe in its taste.

The interior of the seven-seater has been similarly tweaked with a new steering wheel, upgraded dashboard and new graphics.

A new nine-speed automatic gearbox not only smoothes things out it also reduces emissions and consumption. This comes with the option of low-range gears and electronic diff locks for those who want to take their GLS where the advertising tells them they can.

This will be matched with a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 diesel producing 187bhp. Quite what emission and consumption figures will be, we’ll have to wait to find out nearer the launch date of early next year. There are petrol engines, but not in the UK, although there will be a monster 5.5-litre V8 AMG version pumping out 577bhp (up 27bhp).

The standard Airmatic air suspension system also gets breathed on, to improve self-levelling which should make cornering better while also improving comfort.

So pretty much every aspect of the vehicle has been upgraded, from name to suspension, yet the prices aren’t expected to rise much. Prices should start at around the £63,000 mark.
