New small SUVs for 2017

Still an extremely popular vehicle choice in the UK, car manufacturers are gearing up to produce a range of new small SUVs this year.

BMW X2 (early 2018)

Sports-oriented, style-led BMW X2 SUV will share many of its parts with the smaller X1, one of the best small SUVs on sale right now. A thinly disguised concept car previewed the final car’s design at the Paris motor show.

Citroën C3 Aircross (early 2018)

The C3 Aircross will replace the ageing but recommendable C3 Picasso MPV. Its design will be influenced by the quirky C4 Cactus, and its cabin will be flexible and family friendly. Buyers will love its broad customisation options, new tech, plenty of safety gear and broad engine choice. Prices should start at around £16,000.

Hyundai Kona (October 2017)

The Hyundai range’s third SUV, the Kona will boast futuristic looks, 1.0 and 1.6-litre petrol plus two 1.6 diesel engines and a six-speed manual gearbox. It is set to cost from around £15,000, and come with a 5.0in infotainment touchscreen, six airbags, lane-keeping assistance and a driver attention monitor. Auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, blind-spot detection and a rear cross-traffic alert will be among the options.

Jaguar E-Pace (Late 2017)

Range Rover Evoque-sized E-Pace is set to rival the Audi Q3. Costing from £28,500, it will have sporty looks, a useable and high-quality cabin and is expected to use 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines.

Jeep Compass (early 2018)

Set to rival the Nissan Qashqai and Volkswagen Tiguan, the Jeep Compass will be offered with three petrol engines and a pair of diesels.

Kia Stonic (October 2017)

Rio family hatchback-based Kia Stonic will go up against the Renault Captur with 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines, two and four-wheel drive, and a price of around £15,000.

MG XS (early 2018)

Touted as a budget alternative to the Nissan Juke, MG’s second SUV will sit beneath the GS. The newcomer looks more dramatic than its larger stablemate, with a Jaguar-like grille and distinctive headlights.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (early 2018)

Reviving a name previously used on a Mitsubishi sports car model, the Eclipse Cross small SUV will rival the Nissan Qashqai. Its futuristic, angular styling features a sloping, coupé-style roofline, and it’ll have two engines. There’s a new 1.5-litre petrol turbo with a new CVT auto with eight-speed Sport Mode manual override, and a 2.2 diesel with a new eight-speed auto.

Nissan Qashqai (December 2017)

Second-generation Nissan Qashqai facelift will include various cosmetic refreshes plus semi-autonomous driving technology. This can accelerate, brake and steer by sensing the road and other cars with an ultra-sensitive camera.
