Powering the fifth-gen E-Class will be a range of five engines at launch, with that number rising to eight in time. The launch line-up includes a brand new 2.0-litre turbodiesel. This not only pumps out 192bhp, but it also emits just 102g/km of CO2 and can return 72.4mpg it is claimed. Petrol engines after launch will include a 242bhp 2.0-litre, a 326bhp 3.0-litre V6 and an AMG E63 version with 580bhp.

Less dramatic, but a plug-in hybrid which combines electric with 2.0-litre turbo petrol power will give 275bhp combined output yet with CO2 emissions of just 49g/km. All-electric range is a claimed 19 miles so expect the reality to be less than that.

Inside the cabin is revamped with new digital instruments and infotainment system with a pair of 12.3in screens on every model bar the entry-level cars. The technology also includes Drive Pilot, where the system can be put in autonomous mode to follow the car in front at speeds up to 81mph yet can still steer and brake when needed. The system is joined by Speed Limit Pilot to make sure you don’t try and do 81mph in a 50mph zone, and an Active Lane Change Assist.

How much will all these goodies and new kit cost? We’ll have to wait for definitive prices, but when the car goes on sale in a few months time it’s not expected to be more than about £1500 more than the current model, which starts at £34,870.
