Volkswagen’s junior SUV is growing up. The much-revised Tiguan will be bigger in almost every way than the original model it replaces – it’s longer, wider and has a greater wheelbase.

It’s not as tall, however. But there’ll be more space inside, whether you’re sat up front or in the rear – and it’ll swallow an improved 615 litres of cargo, or 1655 with the back seats down.

Engine options include two petrol units displacing 1.4 and 2.0 litres. But almost all UK sales will go to a quartet of diesels – a 1.6 TDI delivering 114bhp and three versions of the 2.0 TDI, offering a choice of 148, 178 and 217bhp outputs.

A full model range and equipment line-up is yet to be finalised, but a six-speed manual box is expected to be standard on most vehicles – augmented by the the usual dual-clutch DSG auto options.

The Tiguan’s reputation as a credible off-tarmac performer will remain, too, with all-wheel drive either standard or optional with most engines.

Further down the line, Volkswagen recently showed the Tiguan GTE, a plug-in hybrid concept which it said returns 42g/km and 149mpg. There’s no official word yet that this will translate into a production vehicle – but to introduce it so close to the Tiguan’s launch would be odd if there weren’t plans to build it.

The Tiguan goes on sale in the UK this coming spring. Prices are yet to be announced, but are expected to shadow the outgoing model’s – meaning a starting point somewhere below £25k.
