Driven: Mazda MX5 2.0 BBR Super 190

It’s also wider, thanks to a set of fatter 215/45R17 Goodyear Eagle F1s wrapped around new OZ alloys. And as well as looking more aggressive, it sounds it too, thanks to a new rear box in the exhaust which frees up the engine to rev with a nice purposeful snarl.

That’s not the only silencer in the BBR range; if you want it lighter and more noisy, they can do that too. But unless you’re pretty hardcore yourself, the box on the MX5 tested here strikes the right balance between turning you on and making you wish you could turn it off.

The extra torque does its thing just the way you want it to, too. Not only is there more of it, it comes in at a lower-than-standard 3550rpm, so that’s a double helping of good news. You really feel it, too, with stronger in-gear acceleration and a firmer shove in the back as you work the gearbox to get the best from the extra power.

What really shines, though, is the way this MX5 handles. It wasn’t exactly a blunt instrument in the first place, but now it’s more settled and sharper than ever to steer, with immaculate body control that entices you into leaning on it in corners.

These are things that should describe any MX5. But if you’re a particularly keen driver, this upgrade pack will make a huge difference. The Super 190 kit really is super – and so is Mazda’s finest after having it added.
