Compact and light BMW M2 packs a punch

Some cars are destined to become instant classics — such as BMW’s I series M Coupe, which arrived five years ago.

Its natural successor is the new BMW M2 (£44,070), which packs a 365hp punch in a light and compact body. At its international launch in California, a few laps around the Laguna Seca Raceway demonstrated its grip and grunt at speeds few owners would explore.

More importantly, the car was just as impressive on the road. With either a six-speed manual or seven-speed twin-clutch auto, it was docile on urban routes and remained smooth and easy to drive out of town. The M2’s smooth ride and fluidity let you hook up sequences of bends in a calm and pleasing manner.

Power comes from a three-litre straight six, which accelerates the car to 62mph in 4.5 seconds and tops out at a limited 155mph (or 168mph with the optional Driver’s Package). It handles speed well and it just grips and grips.

Some cars from BMW’s M Division failed to capture all buyers’ hearts, but the eagerly anticipated M2 should put this right.
