Citroen: retro-fitter builds evocative 1940s van

If you love retro styling but can’t be bothered with the mechanical hassle that goes with owning a genuine classic, here’s the solution. It’s a body kit for the Citroën Relay van that mimics the styling of the iconic 1940s Type H, to celebrate that model’s 70th anniversary.

Costing around £36,100 fully assembled, the body-kitted model is available through Caselani Automobili in minibus and panel van designs. A more rugged 4x4 version is due in September, followed by a camper, tow truck and food truck before the end of the year. All will be available in both left and right-hand drive.

A €3000 (£2522) non-refundable deposit will reserve a build slot, and purchasers will be sent design renderings based on their own specifications within two months. A 40% deposit then payable within two weeks will secure their van, and they’ll take deliver within a week.

Caselani Automobili will begin retrofitting existing vans next year, and in 2019 the body kit will be made available as a standalone product. The kit will also be compatible with the 2006-onwards Peugeot Boxer and Fiat Ducato, and 2013 Ram Promaster.

Industrial designer David Obendorfer has created previous tributes to numerous classics such as the Fiat 600, Volkswagen T1 and Renault 4, as well as concepts for a Fiat 500 coupé and sports convertible. The Type H kit is his first production kit.
