BMW M2 : review

Proving that the best things really do come in small packages, BMW’s most diminutive full-on M division car packs a punch that far outweighs its compact size.

Based on the M235i, but shorter, narrower and lower, the two-door M2 significantly reduces the entry point to M-car ownership.

It kicks out an impressive 365bhp from its 3.0-litre petrol straight-six, which is boosted by a twin-scroll turbocharger. An overboost function temporarily raises the 343lb ft of torque to 369lb ft, and there’s a strong and even spread of muscle across the rev range. Power is fed to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox or optional multi-mode seven-speed DCT dual-clutch auto, tested here. There’s an electronic limited-slip M-differential, too.

The M2 has been circuit-honed over the M235i with a wider track that measures the same as that on the M3 and M4, a more rigid steel bodyshell, 19-inch alloys and lightweight suspension. Driven in anger, the performance is magnificent – and the engine sounds awesome as well, as it propels the car from 0-62mph in 4.3sec. Copious low-down muscle makes for exhilarating corner exits, the rear diff is master of the driven wheels and the auto is superb. An optional package increases the top speed from a limited 155mph to 168mph.

Even more impressive is the chassis’ dynamic set-up. Aided by the intelligent diff, traction and stability-control set-ups, beautifully weighted steering and precise reactions to driver inputs, it makes for a superbly enjoyable drive through quick corners. This car undeniably earns its M moniker.

The four-seat interior is spacious enough for a full complement of passengers and their luggage. Racy touches include a driver’s centre console kneepad, leather M-sport steering wheel and low-set black M-sport seats. The cabin materials aren’t as high-end as the car’s exterior would lead you to expect, however.

The first cars will be delivered to customers in April. Prices start at £44,070, which is £12,500 less than an M3 and puts the M2 firmly in contention with the Audi RS3 and Merc A45 4Matic. On the road and on the track, it won’t disappoint.
