The new BMW M2 has launched

As the new M car entry point below the existing M3, the two-door M2 will cost around £10,000 more than the M235i and £12,500 less than the M3. Its boosted performance comes from a 3.0-litre petrol straight-six, which has a twin-scroll turbo. This will produce 370bhp and 343lb ft of torque, with an additional 26lb ft temporarily available via its overboost function.

There’s either a six-speed manual transmission or an optional seven-speed DCT dual-clutch box, feeding to a standard-fit electronic limited-slip diff. The 0-62mph sprint takes 4.5sec, which is reduced to 4.3sec in the auto. Top speed is a limited 155mph. Launch control and a special Smoky Burnout function will ensure plenty of excitement off the line.

A stiffer chassis and suspension set-up gives much sharper handling, although the M2 is quite not as track-oriented as its M4 GTS stablemate. To bring it into line with the bigger M3 and M4, the rear-wheel-drive platform has a wider track front and back than the M235i. It’s been increased by 64mm and 71mm respectively.

Extra-sporty M family design detailing inside and out includes a generous helping of M badging, black leather seats and a centre-console-mounted driver’s kneepad.

The M2 is priced at £44,070 for the manual and £46,575 for the auto, which will directly pitch it against the Audi RS3 Sportback and Mercedes-AMG A45 4Matic. BMW is planning to bring 2000 examples to the UK, as opposed to the 450 1 Series M Coupes that made it into the country.
