Audi SQ5: first drive

The Audi Q5 is a premium SUV buyers have bought by the droves. Even the expensive range-topping SQ5 proved surprisingly popular in previous-generation guise. This year, Audi’s launched an all-new second-generation Q5 and, to capitlaise on this popularity, it hasn’t hung around rolling out the top-spec SQ5.

Only this time there’s a fundamental difference. The previous model was a highly-tuned turbodiesel. This one, however, has a 3.0-litre turbo V6 petrol engine, good for 0-62mph in 5.4sec and a top speed of 155mph. Surprisingly, it’s a fraction slower than before in the benchmark acceleration test, but it could still be a canny move by Audi, given the current anti-diesel mood.

It’s not without rival, either. Both the Porsche Macan and Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 also boast turbo V6 petrol engines, although the Audi is more than game, thanks to its howling V6 engine and eye-opening acceleration. Indeed, sometimes there’s so much surge, the standard eight-speed automatic gearbox can struggle when pulling sharply away, although it’s much better once on the move.

There are various driving modes as well. Sport is most focused and, if you’ve chosen the £1000 optional adaptive air suspension, it cuts roll through corners considerably. Other areas are sharpened up too, such as steering, accelerator and gearbox responsiveness.

Can it cut it? Yes it can. There’s a commendable lack of body roll when cornering hard, and although the SQ5 may not match the driver-focused Macan, it has the measure of the GLC 43. In Sport mode, it’s very engaging and agile.

Comfort mode is more relaxed, and here, it’s the ride quality that’s the star of the show – despite the SQ5’s standard 20-inch alloy wheels and 30mm lowered suspension. This is a car you’ll relish covering high miles in: do note, though, we haven’t yet driven the model with standard suspension, so don’t take this praise as a thumbs-up for the regular SQ5.

Inside, the same brilliantly interior features, with amazing quality and more space than its key rivals. ‘S’ trimmings bring even more decadent materials and detailing, plus a flat-bottom steering wheel and a wonderful set of sports seats. Chuck in Audi’s top-line MMI Navigation Plus, and a large, practical boot, and the Audi easily betters its rivals.

You do miss out on the brilliant Virtual Cockpit digital instrument display, but otherwise the SQ5 is very well equipped, with electric leather seats, those ultra-large alloys, all-round parking sensors and climate control all as standard. It costs more than its rivals from Porsche and Mercedes-AMG, but this is the reason why.
