Road test: XF estate makes smooth moves

There's a new estate version of Jaguar’s successful XF model — only it isn’t an estate. Jaguar insists it is a Sportbrake. Whatever.

Adding greater load-lugging capacity and more rakish lines to this stylish model will further increase its appeal. Press a button to lower the rear seats and load capacity rises from 550 litres to 1,675. That’s similar to a BMW 5 Series Touring and an Audi A6 Avant, but rather less than a Mercedes E class.

Engine options are both diesel, either a 161bhp 2.2-litre four cylinder unit capable of 55.4mpg or a 197bhp three-litre V6 good for 31.6mpg. The smaller engine is not the smoothest while under load, but is very refined at cruising speeds, and the V6 is a gem, flexible, torquey and creamy. In both cases, power comes through an eight-speed auto gearbox so smooth you rarely notice it working.

Whatever the load, standard adaptive air suspension maintains the correct ride height and ride quality is first class. There’s plenty of head and legroom in the front and rear and the cabin has an elegant and unfussy quality which makes it easy to use. There is also extra storage capacity under the floor and the rear seats fold flat.

A welter of optional accessories is available for the model, including a waterproof liner for the rear compartment, instantly dubbed the axe-murder special at the car’s launch in Scotland.

On the road, the BMW just pips it for driver appeal, although the Jaguar is an enjoyable car to drive, its fine steering letting you know exactly how much grip there is.

A desirable 4x4 version is planned for next year, but it isn’t coming to the UK, according to Jaguar. That’s a shame, but you never know…
