Road test: MINI JCW GP

However fast or slow a MINI is, it is always fun to drive. But these days MINI thrills can have a maxi price tag. The latest range of John Cooper Works MINIs may be a hoot, but £34,000 for a well-specced MINI Countryman JCW seems a bit steep.

The most bangs per buck probably come with the two-seater MINI JCW GP, the most focused model, with pin-sharp steering, terrific brakes and yet an agreeably pliant ride.

Subtle it ain’t. Decals, badges, red detailing, spoilers and bits of piano black have been sprinkled like Christmas tinsel, but once on the road you could forgive it anything.

The way it delivers its 218hp feels brilliantly controlled — there is hardly any scrabbling for grip — and it takes courage to explore the limits of the car’s leech-like adhesion to Tarmac.

The more you push it, the more it impresses. Unlike the first JCW GP, which appeared in 2006, the new model is not supercharged but turbocharged, so there are fewer characterful whirring noises, but the performance is much the same, although delivered in a less frantic way. You can reach 62mph in 6.3 seconds, and MINI claims fuel consumption of 39.8mpg.

Numerous technical improvements add up to a more civilised car you could enjoy driving every day, rather than one reserved solely for holidays and track days.

At £28,790, the GP is more than £6,000 pricier than the MINI JCW hatch, which also feels impressively well sorted and firmly placed on the road. Rarity value would partly offset the difference when selling, but it’s still a lot more for marginal handling improvements.
